Electric charging points in the UK

UK electric car market in 2030

You could say the UK electric car market will change in 2030. And you would be wrong. In 2030, the entire UK car market will change. So much that for one of the segments, the term “EV market” and the term “car market” will be interchangeable, without a single point to distinguish one from another.

But let’s be specific.

Brand-new electric car market

The most dramatic change will occur for the electric car market. To clarify, since 2030, it will be the only brand-new car market. No pure diesel vehicles. No pure petrol vehicles either. In other words, the UK new car market will be no longer available for conventional internal combustion engine vehicles due to the UK Government ICE ban.

Indeed, since 2030, the UK Government will no longer allow selling vehicles that base their riding power only on the internal combustion engines. Therefore, only two kinds of vehicles (named as ultra low emission vehicles, ULEV) will be legal to purchase as brand-new:

  • Pure battery cars
  • Plug-in hybrids of a specified electric range

That is why the Government is so proactive in developing EV charging infrastructure. That is to say, the availability of electric charging points is among the aspects that form the basis for the aforementioned change to happen. Another aspect is technological progress. And this progress is already on its way with batteries more powerful and even more eco-friendly.

Used electric car market

When it comes to the used car market, in 2030, the changes here will not be such breathtaking. In other words, conventional diesel and petrol autos will be still available for sale. At least, till the 2040 year. However, changes are also inevitable.

To clarify, the market share for used EVs will significantly rise and will tend to dominate soon. Because the road to EV-driving is already to go.

Here, let’s turn o statistics. According to statistical release by the UK Department for Transport, in 2020:

  • The total number of all cars on the UK roads was around 35 million
  • Ultra low emission cars were 20.8% of all first-time registrations (with a large increase if compared to previous years – for example, they were only 2.1% of all first-times in 2018))
  • Electric and plug-in hybrids were 1.1% of the total car number (compared with only 0.5% in 2018)

Thus, the general trend for using alternative fuel cars is visible for sure. Therefore, we anticipate, when 2030 comes, ULE cars will account for at least 55% of the total. And as new conventional cars will be no longer for sale, such dominance will only increase.

To conclude, there is one more point to mention. Currently, the Government stimulates EV purchases with the grant. So that it does for EV charger purchases stimulation. However, experts consider in 2030 EV purchases will be no longer supported with grants. And so that with EV charger purchases.

So, now, it is an ideal time to buy both, an EV and EV charger. And as for the latter, you can always count on us!
