With one in three new cars sold in the UK in 2026 required to be zero-emission under the ZEV mandate, EV drivers are no longer a niche group of customers, tenants and staff. Businesses that offer charging keep those people on site longer, attract fleets, and in many cases make money from the electricity they sell. This guide walks through a commercial installation from first phone call to first charging session, so you know what to expect and what to ask.
Everything else follows from this. Ask: who will charge here, for how long, and who pays?
A survey establishes three things: where the chargers should go, how power gets to them, and – critically – how much spare capacity your supply has. We look at your maximum demand from half-hourly data or the meter, the incoming supply rating and the state of the distribution boards.
If capacity is tight, there are three routes, in order of cost:
AC chargers (7, 11, 22 kW) are the workhorses of commercial charging: low capital cost, easy on the supply, and perfect wherever cars park for an hour or more. Our commercial AC stations are UK-made posts and wall boxes with dual sockets, RFID/app access and OCPP connectivity.
DC rapid chargers (50–150 kW and above) deliver 100+ miles in half an hour and are what a passing motorist expects to find. They cost ten to twenty times more per unit and demand serious power. Our Charge Complex DC stations are designed for retail parks, service areas and hubs.
Whatever you choose, insist on OCPP compliance so you are never locked into one back-office provider, on smart-charging capability (mandatory in the UK for most new installations), and on a manufacturer who will still be around to service the unit in five years.
A commercial design covers cable routes and trenching, a dedicated distribution board, RCD/RCBO protection per charger, earthing, bollards or wheel stops, bay marking and signage, lighting and accessibility. Every charge point must be notified to the DNO; installations must meet BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) and the IET Code of Practice for EV charging; and any point offered to the public must comply with the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 – contactless payment on 8 kW+ units, price transparency, 99% reliability reporting for rapids, and open data. A competent installer takes care of all of this; you should receive the certificates at hand-over.
A typical AC installation of 4–10 sockets takes 2–5 working days on site once materials and any DNO work are in place. DC projects take longer, mostly because of the grid connection. Commissioning includes testing, connecting each unit to the back office, setting tariffs and access rules, and training your facilities team.
