How much to install EV charging at home

Well, it depends. To clarify, the key aspects that affect your EV charging installation costs include the station you install, the scope of installation works, and the amount of material to use. However, fortunately, there are some factors that may cut your costs – the EV chargepoint grant (the successor to the old OZEV/EVHS home charge grant), if you are eligible, and the company’s special offering. So, when it comes to how much to install EV charging at home in London in 2026, a typical 7 kW home charge point costs about £900–1,200 fully installed, or £1,300–1,800 where a new consumer unit, an earthing upgrade or a long cable run is needed – and the grant can take up to £500 off that if you qualify.

Before we get started

To start with, EV charging installation cost includes the cost of the EV charger and the cost of the work to fit the device into your premises. Fortunately, you can benefit from our Trade-In offer and cut up to 10% off the EVSE cost. All you need to do is just send us your old EV charger.

So, when choosing, for example, one of our electric vehicle charging stations, your costs break down like this:

• From £1,449 for one of our wall-mounted EV charging stations (a 22 kW unit needs a three-phase supply, which most London homes do not have, so check with us which model suits your property; our portable chargers start from £399)
• Up to £144.90 off in exchange for your old EVSE
• Installation, quoted after a survey – a straightforward job with a short cable run and no work on your consumer unit is the cheapest; a new consumer unit, an earthing upgrade or a long run typically moves a London installation from the £900–1,200 bracket into the £1,300–1,800 bracket
• 20% VAT on top of hardware and installation labour

Whatever you choose, keep in mind that every new home charge point sold in Great Britain must be a smart charger under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, and the installer must notify your distribution network operator (UK Power Networks in London). Both are part of a proper installation, so budget for a compliant unit rather than the cheapest box. The good news is that the investment pays back quickly: home charging on a standard tariff costs about 26p/kWh (or 7–10p/kWh on an off-peak EV tariff) against roughly 80p/kWh at a public rapid charger – see our home vs public EV charging cost comparison.

The EV chargepoint grant to reduce your EV charging installation costs

To go further, you may get 75% of the cost of buying and installing a socket, up to £500 (raised from £350 on 1 April 2026), in addition to any other discounts and offerings. Of course, only if you are eligible for the grant and some other conditions are met:

• You rent your home, own a flat, are a residential landlord (up to 200 sockets), or only have on-street parking and are installing an approved cross-pavement charging solution – owners of freehold houses with a driveway are not eligible
• You own an eligible electric vehicle (for household applications) and have your own private off-street parking space, unless you are applying under the on-street parking scheme
• The EV charger you are going to install is on OZEV’s list of approved chargepoints
• The EV charger installer you are going to hire is an OZEV-authorised installer
• Your property meets all the installation and eligibility requirements (flat owners need written permission from the freeholder or property manager)

While the first two and the last bullet points are in the field of your control, the other ones are in the field of our competence.
