OZEV provides financial assistance, covering a significant portion of the costs associated with home EV charger installations - the EV chargepoint grant (the successor to the old EVHS/OLEV home charge scheme). The grant specifically targets home charging, incentivising an individual to install a chargepoint at home. From 1 April 2026 it is worth up to £500 per socket (previously £350), covering up to 75% of the cost of buying and installing the charger.

Eligibility Criteria

OZEV has tailored the grant for renters and flat owners rather than every homeowner, ensuring support goes to those who find home charging hardest to arrange. Note that if you own and live in a freehold house with a driveway, you are not eligible for a grant - you pay the full price of the installation. The eligibility criteria are as follows:

• Own a flat (including shared ownership) or rent a residential property (house or flat)
• Since March 2024, households (owners or renters) with only on-street parking can also apply, provided an approved permanent cross-pavement charging solution (a channel or gully for the cable) is installed with the local highways authority's consent
• Own, lease (for at least six months) or have on order an EV that appears on the OZEV list of eligible vehicles
• Have private, clearly defined off-street parking that you own or are legally allowed to use - unless you are applying under the on-street/cross-pavement route
• Have permission from your landlord or freeholder where the property is not yours
• Install an OZEV-approved smart chargepoint by turning to an OZEV-authorised installer - every new home charger must be a smart charger under the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021
• And, of course, the rebate can be granted only once per property - you cannot claim if you already received the EV chargepoint grant, EVHS or the earlier Domestic Recharge Scheme.

Residential landlords have a separate route and can claim £500 per socket for up to 200 sockets across their properties, while businesses can use the Workplace Charging Scheme for up to 40 sockets at £500 each (extended to March 2027).

OZEV Application Process

Applying for the EV chargepoint grant is a straightforward process. To tell the truth, all you need to do is to be eligible and choose the right installer. First, get a quote from an OZEV-authorised installer, then complete the short online application on GOV.UK, uploading the quote, proof of address (a utility bill or tenancy agreement) and your landlord's or freeholder's permission if required. Once OZEV approves the application, your installer does the work and claims the grant directly, reducing, thus, your expenses on EV chargepoint installation by up to £500. Given that a typical 7 kW home installation in London costs £900-1,200 (see our 2026 London installation cost guide), the grant can cover close to half the bill.

Note, the installation shall be undertaken only after OZEV has confirmed the application, and your installer will also notify the local network operator (UK Power Networks in London) that a new charger has been connected. If your circumstances change or the work is delayed, speak to your installer, who can update or resubmit the claim. The current scheme is funded until 31 March 2027.
