Where an EV charger can be installed

You may often hear about the benefits of installing EV chargers at home or for your business. But do you know exactly where you can install the charging solution and where you cannot?

If you install an EV charger on your own dedicated parking space

In this case, you install the appliance within your own house plot and are free to choose any place for the installation. In other words, if you equip your garage with an EVSE, you can put it wherever you want. The same is true if you equip a parking space near your house and within your own site.

The only thing to consider here is the distance between the equipment and other energized metal facilities. According to the safety standards, the distance should be not less than 2.5 metres.

Thus, for house owners, there are no restrictions on the EV charger installation. Therefore, these ones are more anxious to know how much does it cost to charge an electric car overnight rather than have any worries about the eligible location of the outlet.

If you install an EV charger in off-street parking

To start with, here, we speak only about dedicated off-street car parks. To go further, the installation in off-street parking is available both for residential and commercial buildings. In other words, the aspects we discuss in this chapter are of interest to both individuals and businesses.

So, off-street parking can be as follows:

• external car parks near a shopping mall or any other commercial building
• internal car parks either as detached constructions or facilities integrated into commercial or residential buildings.

Typically, for internal car parks, general practice is a wall-mounted installation while for external car parks, upstand EV chargers are more common. For both cases, there are a few restrictions. First, the station should be at least two metres away from a highway. Second, the Government does not allow to install EV stations within:

• Sites of historic buildings or other nationally important heritage assets
• Sites of the buildings included in the curtilage listing

There is one more option to install charging points. Here, we are speaking about on-street installation. However, in most cases, such installation requires special planning permission and, thus, is undertaken mostly by authorities within the national roll-out scheme. Interestingly, in those streets that haven’t got dedicated parking spaces, it is possible to install a charging outlet right within a street light.
