Wall-mounted home EV charger installed beside a driveway at a semi-detached house in Bromley

Bromley is home-charging country. The council's own EV charging strategy estimates that around 65% of households in the borough have off-street parking, and the roads of Beckenham, Petts Wood, Orpington, West Wickham and Hayes are lined with inter-war semis on generous plots with side access. For most EV owners here the question is not "where can I charge?" but "which wall box, and how soon can it be fitted?"

Auto E designs and manufactures EV charging stations in the UK and, through our authorised partner installer, fits and repairs chargers across the borough, from Penge and Anerley to Chislehurst and Biggin Hill. Free survey, fixed quote, three-year warranty on every Auto E station.

Bromley property types and what they mean for installation

Semis and detached houses with driveways

The bulk of our Bromley work: a wall box on the side elevation and a cable run to the consumer unit, with earthing checked and upgraded where the older stock needs it. Larger detached homes in Chislehurst, Bickley, Keston and Farnborough often need a longer run to a detached garage or gate post, which costs more.

Terraces and flats without a driveway

Roughly a third of Bromley households park on the street. The council has paused requests for new on-street chargepoint locations because of the backlog, so the more useful route is Bromley's home gully scheme, piloted at eight addresses in Bromley, Penge, Anerley and Beckenham from July 2023 and now open to applications: £100 to apply plus £699 for installation. The council does not supply the charger, the gully cannot sit within 2 metres of a lamp column, it only works on a public-highway pavement outside your boundary, and you must be able to park legally and regularly outside your home. We fit the wall box that feeds it, and cross-pavement solutions qualify for the £500 chargepoint grant.

Controlled parking zones

Bromley uses local permit zones rather than borough-wide CPZs: Beckenham (BEC and F) runs 8.30am to 8pm daily, Chislehurst (U) and Petts Wood (S) through the working day, and Orpington has four zones. A permit does not reserve the space outside your house, so a gully only works if you can usually park there; for some households a driveway conversion is the better answer.

Dropped kerbs, front gardens and conservation areas

Only the council builds crossovers in Bromley (£100 non-refundable application fee), and hardstanding over 5 square metres must be porous or drained or it needs planning permission. The borough has 47 conservation areas, and Article 4 directions apply in the Petts Wood Area of Special Residential Character and the Chislehurst Road conservation area. A wall box on the side of a house is rarely an issue, but we check whether any consent is needed before we drill.

  • EV chargepoint grant: £500 per socket from 1 April 2026 for renters, flat owners, landlords (up to 200 sockets) and households with on-street parking using an approved cross-pavement solution – which is exactly what Bromley's gully scheme provides, making this one of the few boroughs where the on-street route is already live.
  • Workplace Charging Scheme: £500 per socket, up to 40 sockets and 75% of costs, extended to March 2027 with a new digital application from April 2026; state schools can claim £2,000 per socket. Businesses also get 100% first-year capital allowances. Read our WCS 2026 guide.

FAQ

How much does a home EV charger cost to install in Bromley?

Typically £900-1,200 for a 7 kW wall box; up to £1,800 if the board needs upgrading or the run to a detached garage is long. We quote after a free survey.

I live in a Beckenham terrace with no driveway – can I charge at home?

Yes: through Bromley's home gully scheme (£799 to the council) plus a wall box we fit on your front elevation, or by adding a driveway with a council-built dropped kerb. The £500 chargepoint grant covers cross-pavement solutions.

Do I need planning permission for a wall box in Chislehurst or Petts Wood?

Not usually for a wall-mounted unit on the house, but both areas carry conservation-area or Article 4 designations, so we check before installation and choose a discreet spot.

Can you install 22 kW at my house?

Only with a three-phase supply, which is uncommon in Bromley's housing stock. On single phase, 7 kW is the right choice.
